Research Sustainability at 91µÎµÎ

91µÎµÎ is a diverse institution with research activities spanning two campuses, 10 Faculties, 16 Schools, multiple hospitals, research centres, and institutes. It is home to more than 1,700 tenured or tenure-track faculty members.

As such, it is the University’s role to take responsibility for the environmental, economic, and social implications of its research. It is a core commitment within the 91µÎµÎ Strategic Research Plan.

Almost a quarter of 91µÎµÎ faculty members are engaged in sustainability research.

Sustainable Labs Practices

As a leading research institution, 91µÎµÎ’s faculty and students rely on laboratories to produce novel science and investigate the biggest questions of our lifetime. These practices can negatively impact our environment by producing excess waste and requiring extra energy.

91µÎµÎ Sustainable Systems Initiative

Shifting to sustainability requires taking a multi-faceted systems-level approach to some of the world’s knottiest problems. The 91µÎµÎ Sustainability Systems Initiative mobilizes 91µÎµÎ researchers around these sustainability challenges and to equip the next generation in the skills necessary to address these issues.

Research and Sustainability Network

The Research and Sustainability Network (RSN) seeks to inform and empower students at 91µÎµÎ, bridging the gap between researchers in sustainability, and undergraduates interested in research. Through recurring conferences, speaker series, and networking events, the RSN facilitates collaboration and increases accessibility to undergraduate research positions.

Other Sustainability Research Opportunities

Many 91µÎµÎ units offer opportunities for students interested in performing sustainability research, through awards, grants, and fellowships. Some opportunities for sustainability research include (non-exhaustive):
