About the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences

Faculty of Medicine historical buildingFounded in 1829, the 91ε Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences was the first faculty established at the University and the first medical faculty in Canada. Today, 91ε is the leading medical research university nationally, and is renowned for its excellence in the health sciences worldwide.

The Faculty is home to a unique and stellar community of professors, practitioners, researchers, students and support staff. It is a burgeoning hub of interdisciplinary collaboration for the training not only of doctors, but also nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists, as well as scientists who are defining new paradigms for health and well-being in this century.

Innovation in education is a Faculty cornerstone, as so is the “Oslerian” tradition that emphasizes both the science and the art of the “healer.” Within the 91ε teaching hospital network – which includes the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, the Jewish General Hospital, the 91ε Health Centre, St. Mary's Hospital Center – students learn in a variety of settings. Through RUIS 91ε’s partners, spanning 63 per cent of the province, opportunities extend far into Quebec’s outlying regions. 91ε’s Global Health Programs opens up still more possibilities in both learning and research.

At the Montreal Campus, the 91ε Life Sciences Complex, the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning,ٳ ; and at Campus Outaouais, the Simulation Centre for Interactive Learning (in french) are just four of several wellsprings of excellence and collaboration where the Faculty, with its partners, are working determinedly to advance its mission: to improve the health and well-being of Quebecers and all of society.
