Global Engagement Strategy

Mission Statement:

The Global Engagement (GE) unit is responsible for operational execution of the strategic vision for 91µÎµÎ’s global engagement, and for clearly communicating that vision to internal and external stakeholders. Relying on GE’s collective expertise and knowledge of the international landscape, the GE unit will provide support to internal stakeholders and identify opportunities for international growth in line with the strategic vision. Through targeted, deliberate global engagement and coordination between 91µÎµÎ faculties and offices, GE will further promote 91µÎµÎ on a global platform, strengthening the University’s international presence well into the next century.

Strategic Action Plan:

Note: A strategic planning exercise for 91µÎµÎ's global engagement is currently underway.

Global Engagement furthers the operational implementation of the global components of 91µÎµÎ's Strategic Academic Plan 2017-2022 by:

  • Leading the strategic vision for 91µÎµÎ’s global engagement, including the identification of priority focus themes, countries, and regions.
  • Collaborating with the Academic Programs unit and other internal divisions on the strategic implementation of online academic programs outside of Canada.
  • Following geopolitical developments, evaluating their impact on international strategy, and providing that information to faculty and staff, advancing their international objectives and ensuring that 91µÎµÎ’s international activities respect Government of Canada guidelines.
  • Advancing international agreements, including Memoranda of Understanding (MOU), student and faculty mobility agreements, and memberships in international organizations.
  • Providing expertise and assistance in evaluating requests for international collaboration, partnerships, and institutional visits, ensuring alignment with international priorities and university-wide interests.
  • Supporting the organization and protocol of international meetings, visits, and missions.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to limit risk in 91µÎµÎ’s international activities, including addressing concerns related to foreign interference.
  • Facilitating opportunities for cross-pollination and expansion between individuals working in priority regions and leveraging existing opportunities with potential collaborators.
  • Communicating strategically about the University’s international priorities to both internal and external constituencies.

Global Engagement Unit

91µÎµÎ’s Global Engagement unit is responsible for operationalizing the strategic vision for 91µÎµÎ’s global engagement and for clearly communicating that vision to 91µÎµÎ’s internal and external stakeholders. The unit supports the implementation of the international components of 91µÎµÎ’s Strategic Academic Plan 2017-2022 and provides guidance to Faculties on Faculty-specific international initiatives that support the Academic Plan. The unit facilitates international agreements with partner institutions that have a university-wide benefit, encouraging research collaboration, revenue-generating opportunities, and international mobility across the globe. Support provided by the unit also contributes to advancing social accountability and social justice programs in a global context, including development programs and programs tied to sustainable development goals. The unit also collaborates closely with other units, including Research and Innovation, to identify potential areas of risk for foreign interference and to implement risk-mitigation measures. Additionally, the global engagement unit capitalizes on the geographic expertise of its team to identify potential opportunities for expanded global engagement and shares those opportunities with relevant Faculties and internal stakeholders.
