EL Degree Requirement for the BCom Program

Starting Fall 2024, all incoming BCom students will be required to complete a minimum 3-credit experiential learning course to graduate with a BCom degree. Students may fulfill this requirement at any point during the BCom program.

Courses can fulfill the EL Degree Requirement by meeting specific thresholds established by the Faculty’s Experiential Learning Committee, outlined below.  If you think your course could fulfill the requirement, please let us know at el.mgmt [at] mcgill.ca so that it can be included in the course repository.

Option 1  Option 2

The EL component is hands-on, realistic, and gives students a good example of the type of work they may do after graduation. Students also interact with (a person or persons nominated by) an outside organization or stakeholder. This interaction may range from ongoing collaboration to one or two visits to the class to speak with students about the project.

For example, students may work on a problem from a company or community partner and work closely with members of that organization throughout the process.

EL component is hands-on, realistic, and offers students a good example of the type of work they may do after graduation. However, students do not interact with an outside organization or stakeholder in completing the project.

For example, students complete a simulation, or work on gathering and/or cleaning up a large dataset.

The EL activity accounts for at least 30% of the student’s final grade.  The EL activity accounts for at least 45% of the student’s final grade.

For more information about what counts as interaction with an outside partner, view the partner engagement guidelines below:
